The Top Holiday Gifts in the US for 2020

At Treetopia, we are all about self-expression through holiday decorating. Whether big or small, green or pink, filled with ornaments or undecorated, a Christmas tree sets a joyful tone in homes across the country. We also know that for many, it’s what’s under the tree that matters, too.

This year more than ever, we all want to do what we can to spread joy. For those who can, giving gifts is a great way to show you care.

We understand that it's been such a stressful year. Agonizing over which gifts to give or ask for wouldn’t be in the spirit of gift exchanges. To make things easier, we thought to share some ideas by compiling the most popular gifts across the country this year.

Using Google Search trends from 2020, we compiled the most popular gifts based on what people have been looking for. We examined different categories, including entertainment, home, beauty, technology, health, and children’s gifts. First, we determined the top searched gifts by category. Then, we conducted a state-by-state survey to determine what item per category people would prefer giving or receiving this holiday season. Based on these combined datasets, we were able to create statewide and nationwide results to see what the crowd favorites under any tree would be.

Here’s what we found. Gifters, take note!

Top-Searched Overall Gift Nationwide

First, we looked at the nationwide trends for the most popular gifts overall. We found that the results varied across different states and regions. These offered some cool insights.

We noticed that the most popular gift nationwide was an Amazon Echo. It was the top-searched gift in states spanning from Connecticut to Washington. This tied with a Bluetooth Speaker—mainly popular in the Midwest. It was the top-searched item in Michigan, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Arkansas.

Other popular items were Instant Pots and a Mystery Machine toy, perfect for kids who want to spend their extra time at home sleuthing.

Top-Searched Gift Overall in Every State

Some gifts were unique to certain states, including health and wellness gifts. In New Hampshire and Wisconsin, a Fitbit was the most popular. In Washington, D.C., where many gym-goers have been confined to their capital-area apartments, a Peloton fitness machine was the most wanted gift.

On the other hand, some states’ residents were far more interested in children’s gifts. In the Midwest, like Illinois and Nebraska, children’s sewing kits and Lego sets were the most popular gift ideas. In the South, toys like a singing Elsa and a PlayStation 5 topped gift wishlists.

Top Home Gifts

The top-searched gift across the country was the Amazon Echo. Based on this, we decided to take a deeper look at the most popular kitchen and home gifts this year. According to Google Trends data, other popular home gifts included air fryers, Ring doorbell cameras, and Dyson vacuums.

It’s hardly surprising that these gifts made the top of the list. With more Americans staying home due to social distancing, many would likely love a gift that makes quarantine life easier. These include kitchen appliances to shake-fry their food or a door camera for safety and peace of mind.

Top Tech Gifts

Similarly, we decided to look at top tech gifts, given that a Bluetooth speaker was one of the top-searched across four states. The tech gift on top of everyone’s wish lists was an iPhone. Unsurprising, as it’s the handheld link to social media, self-improvement apps, and online businesses. Aside from that, the popular Bluetooth speaker just barely edged out Apple AirPods.

Interestingly, even though online work, learning, and interacting have become a greater part of our lives, only one PC or laptop made the top 10 most popular tech gifts. It’s the Chromebook, which earned 8.67% of votes.

Top Beauty Gifts

We also wanted to look at popular beauty gifts. With all the video conferencing, a little appearance upkeep might make a world of difference for on-camera confidence.

Interestingly, the most popular beauty gift was also a bit of a tech present. A Dyson hairdryer was the gift 16.29% of respondents said they wanted to give or receive. It even got the stamp of approval from everyone’s favorite hairstylist and giver of love, Jonathan Van Ness.

The third most popular gift, a FabFitFun subscription box, was the most popular pick of 11.32% of respondents. Interestingly, it’s advertised as a great gift idea for those who want to leave beauty offerings up to experts. It’s also an opportunity to get into the subscription box trend.

Top Health Gifts

We know that feeling good is just as important as looking good. So, we made it a point to look at the most popular health gifts across the country.

The most popular health gift is general home gym equipment. Think dumbbells, yoga mats, and tension bands. More than 32% of respondents ranked this as their top gift to give or receive.

Behind that, it seems that top picks offered both function and style. Nike sneakers, athleisure clothes, and jerseys from the NBA, FIFA, and the NHL all made the top of the list.

Top Entertainment Gifts

Aside from self-care or home-keeping items, Americans need simple entertainment gifts more than ever. Therefore, we looked at the most searched gifts for this category.

The most popular item that 27.1% of respondents ranked as the gift they’d most like to give or receive, was gift cards. On top of that, specific subscription service gift cards were very popular, including those for Amazon Prime, Netflix, Apple Music, and Disney+. Recent Marketwatch reports say that Americans spend over $200 monthly on subscription services. These gifts will be truly well-received.

Top Kids’ Gifts

Last but certainly not least, we wanted to look at the most popular children’s gifts. After all, there’s nothing better than seeing kids’ faces light up when they open their presents!

According to Google Trends data, the most popular gift for children across the country was a classic Lego set. Over 25% of respondents ranked it as their top gift. As shared in a PopSugar article, 2020 Lego sets allow kids to build everything from Avengers’ super scenes to Baby Yoda himself.

If your house is already filled with far too many blocks to bear, other popular children’s gifts were the Mystery Machine, Play-Doh, and a Nerf Blaster.

Overall, there are plenty of options for those who can give gifts this holiday season. Aside from gifts, remember that the holidays are about giving time to the ones we love. This can consist of making cookies over Facetime or getting together, as a smaller group, to hang up ornaments on a Christmas tree. Believe us when we say that we’ve got you covered there!
